I will actually be at the tournament not sure if I am competing I will have my Gi and shorts just in case. I am going to do some photography for a few friends that are competing. If my match wouldn't be at the same time as theirs I'll probably compete. What order are the matches? I am a beginner at Jiu Jitsu and I am a heavyweight good luck ever finding a female my size that actually competes in any sport let alone jiu jitsu.

Hey Ry,
Our next tournament is in Delaware (maybe 30 minutes or so from Philly) on June 21. I'm happy to keep you posted on the registration for women, for sure! There are a few registered right now, but I don't remember what size they are. I've never had to fight men at a tournament, but I've been to plenty where I didn't get a match at all.

What belt/skill level are you? If I know that you'll be competing, I can also reach out to other women near your size/skill. If you competed up to 185 with men, a few women come to mind right away. They're different skill levels, though, so I need to know who to bug! :)

Ry, even in SoCal, where there are tons of tournaments, it is a crap shoot as to whether and how many opponents you will have. But just keep training and competing and eventually the number will increase!

Hi, Ry! You should check with Chrissy (who is on here). She runs US Grappling, and they seem to have pretty good women's divisions at their events, and she will keep you posted as to how many women enter and such before you have to drive 3 hours for nothing. You should also check out Grapplers Quest; they usually have a pretty good women's turnout. Otherwise, there is always Pan Ams and the Worlds. There, you can also check ahead online and see how many women are registered in your division before you sign up.

Thanks the last tournament I went to I was waiting for a girl to show up I didn't care what belt just so I could compete and no girls showed and at first they didn't want me to compete at all but since I drove over 3 hours to go there they said I could compete with the guys but even worse there weren't many guys so they did weight classes not rank and I am not light by any means so I was competing with guys that were 185lbs the guy I went against said he had only been training for 3 months but he had califlower ear so he must have either trained really hard in those three months or he had wrestled before I wound up tapping because my neck started popping and I chickened out.

I agree. It's frustrating to spend so much time training to show up to a tournament and have one other person in your division, or sometimes no one. Last year I entered the Women's Purple, Brown, Black division as a white belt, I figured I had nothing to lose. I ended up with third place. Just keep at it, they'll come around eventually.

I'm tired of going to events and being turned away because I am a girl or going against guys. What's the deal where are all the female fighters?
